Health ruling to end campaign mystery, unleash ads

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barely four months before the nation votes, one of the biggest factors in the fight for the White House still is a mystery. That will change on Thursday.

The Supreme Court's expected ruling on President Barack Obama's sweeping federal health care law will shape the contours of the presidential campaign through the summer and fall. Both Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are primed to use the ruling ? whatever it is ? for political gain.

Obama expresses confidence the court will uphold his signature legislative initiative. But he won't be shocked if a conservative majority overturns the most controversial provision, those familiar with his thinking say. Romney aides say the Republican candidate will get a political boost if the court strikes down the measure. But they don't want celebrations that could alienate voters who could lose health care benefits through the decision.

Neither candidate has any direct influence over the decision. The court may uphold the health care law, strike it down or deem the requirement that most Americans carry health insurance unconstitutional while keeping other aspects in place.

The ruling is expected to be followed almost immediately by a barrage of advertisements and fundraising appeals from Democrats and Republicans, with both sides trying to cast the decision in the most advantageous light for its candidate.

Romney, running on a pledge to repeal Obama's overhaul as a costly federal power grab, has focused more than usual on the Supreme Court ruling this week. In campaign appearances in Virginia, New Jersey and New York, he offered supporters and donors a preview of his likely response to the decision.

At a Tuesday evening New Jersey fundraiser, Romney declared that if the Supreme Court lets the law stand, "it will make it very clear to the American people that they must elect someone who will stop it." If the high court overturns the law, "then the first three and a half years of the Obama administration will have been entirely wasted, because that's where he devoted his energy and passion," the Republican said.

Romney's campaign also is running new ads this week in Virginia, North Carolina and Iowa promising he would move to "repeal Obamacare" on his first day in office.

Obama, while recently avoiding mentioning the impending court ruling directly, has vigorously defended the overhaul as critical to the public's health and well-being in his own campaign events this week.

"I think it was the right thing to do. I know it was the right thing to do," he told supporters in Boston.

The White House also published a blog post Wednesday touting the benefits of the overhaul, including free preventive services for people on Medicare and health insurance rebates for nearly 13 million Americans.

Both Obama and Romney were scheduled to be in Washington on Thursday. Romney planned to comment on the ruling during an event on Capitol Hill, and Obama was certain to address the decision as well.

Obama advisers say the Supreme Court showed reasonableness earlier this week in a ruling on an Arizona immigration case, and they see it as a hopeful sign for how the court might rule on health care.

If the court upholds the law, Obama could get an election year gust of wind at his back, with his vision and leadership validated. If the court strikes down the overhaul, the White House would seek to cast the decision as detrimental to millions of Americans by highlighting popular elements of the law that would disappear, such as preventive care and coverage for young adults on a parent's plan.

Romney, who as Massachusetts governor signed a health care law on which the Obama's federal law was modeled, is expected to use the health care law ? or what remains of it ? as a defining issue going forward in the presidential contest, regardless of which way the court's ruling goes.

Aides say that that Romney will hold up the law either as a symbol of Obama's ineffective leadership or as federal overreach that only the Republican can stop.

The campaign has coordinated its response directly with the Republican National Committee and House Republicans, who have agreed not to "spike the ball" ? as one Republican put it ? should the law be struck down. Romney's campaign worries that an over-celebratory tone may turn off voters affected by the decision.

Still, both sides will use it to raise money and motivate supporters. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a fundraising appeal for a "health care rapid response fund," telling supporters in an email Wednesday that however the court rules, "Democrats are in for a tough fight."

A flood of advertisements is also expected from outside groups. The conservative group called Concerned Women for America pre-emptively launched a six-state, $6 million advertising campaign this week claiming Obama's overhaul results in delayed and denied care, as well as skyrocketing costs.

New childfriendly Vincitab II 'M' is smaller, lighter, cheaper

If your Vinci II tablet was working out your children's arms, more than their minds, then fear not. The makers have just announced the arrival of a new, lighter "M" model. The 5-inch kiddie slate is compatible with the Vinci Curriculum and Kids library apps, and keeps the option for Parent Mode for when Dad wants to check the football scores via the Android-based OS. Designed for users kids on the go, the tablets can also be networked for some little-LAN action. It's still the same 1.2 GHz A8 Cortex running the show, but if you thought that smaller screen might mean more battery, then sadly you're mistaken, with the company's own website estimating just four hours of junior-fun -- half that of the larger version. That said, up for pre-order at $169 ($80 less than the 7-incher) maybe that's enough to soften the already rubberized blow.

Relationships suck: Marriage is ok, sex is better : Imprint Online

The first time anyone has sex, it?s probably not the greatest or most beautiful thing ever to happen. It is likely to be a little awkward and messy for most people (and by most I could probably say all). Obviously a great number of us place a grandiose level of importance on the first time and everyone can say it?s stupid to do that, but can you really blame humanity for it?
On top of the fact that everyone remembers their first, we all believe subconsciously (or consciously) that the first time should be amazing because of previous experiences. Think of all the things you?ve ever done to have fun and recall the first time you did them. I could probably guarantee that the first time was the best, if not one of the best, times. So what does that have to do with marriage?

Last week, I stated that people should be allowed to lose their virginity at their own pace for their own reasons. However, as a corollary reflecting one of Voltaire?s infamous quotes, I will defend your right to choose when and why you lose your virginity, but that doesn?t mean I agree with it.

For those who want to have sex for the sheer joy of it, I have nothing more to say to you than have at it and make sure you wrap your junk. To those waiting, I hope the reason for your patience makes sense. I can get behind those who want to wait for the right person or the right time; it?s when you pick a specific temporal event that I become perplexed.
I have heard people in high school and university say that they wanted to wait or should wait anywhere from three dates to a year before having sex.

To those people, I ask, why not longer? Why is that number better than any other number?
Picking a certain length of time is like guessing the number of jelly beans in a small jar: one is too small and a million is too large but you pick somewhere in between because it seems the most realistic. Marriage is simply an extension of that temporal concept. You may not know when you?re getting married, but it?s an event and a time you are certain will arise in your future. Succinctly put, it is a known and tangible variable.

In the end though, choosing a length of time or marriage as your green light for sex leads to the same problem ? you?re using a physical entity to manage an emotional one. These two don?t mesh well together because neither has any control over the other.

At its core, the concept of waiting is based on emotion. It?s the internalized idea that the person you become physically intimate with also evokes the feeling of mental intimacy. A lot of things go into this connection, like trust and oftentimes love, but none of these things can be planned for.

I can?t name the moments when my friends stopped being acquaintances and started being chums and I can?t remember when I started trusting them. I can?t remember because feelings just happen on their own accord. I can sit here being depressed but I do not have the power to give my emotions some sort of deadline to end that sadness as much as I can say, ?In five minutes, I?ll be happy.?

Why is that? Well, emotions are exhaustingly fickle. That?s why choosing some physical trait, like a ceremony, is so arbitrary and meaningless.

Of course, there are those who will claim that marriage is a symbol of ultimate unification and a solidification of trust and love. To them I ask, was it not present beforehand? I would think it would have to be if you are willing to ask them to spend the rest of their life with you. Why you would need a priest or a metal ring to tell you that is beyond me.

The only reason anyone believes marriage holds some sort of special influence is the way we were raised and what societal norms were fed to us. Any outsider unaware of the custom would not think much of it, but I can guarantee that the loving look between partners will be noticed because intimacy and emotions are universal ? and that?s what matters.

Also, let?s not forget the duality of how capricious our emotions are. They can disappear as swiftly as they appear, which means you can think marriage is a sign for whatever you want but there is no assurance that it will be there the next day. Couples who have been married for whatever length, from 20 days to 20 years, can and have lost the emotions they so vehemently felt on their wedding day.

What everyone should take away from this is that marriage or any other specified length of time should not be trusted with matters of the heart. Plhus, you could end up marrying somebody and the two of you could be sexually incompatible. Now you?ve ruined one of the best things in life and you have to resort to your right hand (or your left hand for all you sinister people).

And if you think that?s not true or that you can fix it, you haven?t had sex yet.

Bethenny-Talk-Show.jpg
Outspoken Bethenny Frankel gave viewers a taste of her no-holds-barred attitude the first week her new Fox talk show, Bethenny, hit the air.

?I?m the R-rated Oprah!? the former Bravo star, Skinnygirl cocktail creator and self-appointed Queen of Too Much Information tells In Touch.

?I?m talking about what my friends are talking about every day,? explains Bethenny, 41, regarding her unfiltered personality. ?We aren?t talking about politics ? we?re talking about dating, marriage and what men think.?

And inevitably, sex. ?Someone says they don?t have enough of it, and someone else says it?s boring,? she tells In Touch. ?But the bottom line is, I?m just like many of the married women in America who watch my show. Sometimes we just want to spice it up a little bit.?
